Bouça

1_The village: Bouça

Bouça is a village with 228 inhabitants (2011 data) that is part of the parish of Cortes do Meio, in the municipality of Covilhã, a city from which it is 16 km away. Welcome to Bouça!

The toponym of Bouça means uncultivated land, where nothing but bush survives, a situation that in no way matches such significance. This land is a true tourist poster of Serra da Estrela. Prostrate at the foot of the Varanda dos Pastores, that respectful granite giant, Bouça offers its visitors unique landscapes and a sample of fresh air, as pure and crystalline are the waters that excavate between its fragments.

At least until the end of the second quarter of the 19th century, it was part of the parish of Santa Maria in Covilhã.

The main urban agglomeration was not always located in the current location. In the early days, people lived in Bouça Velha, on the right bank of the river, half way up the mountain slope that descends from Varanda dos Pastores towards the valley.
