Estrela GeoPark

Estrela Geopark 1

A UNESCO World Geopark is much more than a classification. These are
territories of Science, Education and Culture, where the geological substrate serves as an anchor to
multiple development strategies. It is worth visiting and getting to know Estrela Geopark!

In the context of the Central Region of Continental Portugal, Estrela Geopark includes part or all of the nine municipalities that are structured around Serra da Estrela – Belmonte, Celorico da Beira, Covilhã, Fornos de Algodres, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, Oliveira do Hospital and Seia, a factor that gives them identity and territorial cohesion.

With an area of 2216 km2, the territory of this UNESCO World Geopark reflects a diverse landscape, the result of multiple geological transformations, recorded climatic contrasts, as well as ancient human occupation, the first records of which date back to the beginning of the 4th millennium BC. C. These factors are, in themselves, sufficient cause to make Estrela a territory of strong contrasts, where its landscape, tangible and intangible, reflects a long process of adaptation and successive transformations.

This is a place where wild beauty merges with ancient history, with Estrela being the unifying element of a territory that develops around the geographical feature that was once a factor of separation and that today unites nine municipalities. As the Portuguese writer of the 20th century, Miguel Torga, states “the Star is tall, immense, enigmatic and its physical presence is immediately an obsession, adding to the disturbing reality an even more vivid certainty: that of all local truths emanate from her” (Miguel Torga, 1967).
